This immediately results in a sharper picture on the PlayStation 4 and less jagged compared to the Xbox One. Side by side, you possibly can’t notice the difference, but when zooming in, the differences are pretty clear. However, the Xbox One version is scaled to 1920 x 1080.

It is therefore a missed opportunity in our opinion.Īnother important thing to note is that the Xbox One version actually runs at a native resolution of 1420 x 1080p compared to the 1920 x 1080 found on the PlayStation 4. This is quite surprising since Far Cry 4 is essentially developed by the same studio behind Assassin’s Creed Unity and the technology could have been easily shared between the teams. Additionally, the lack of advanced overall lighting and physical rendering is absent on all platforms.

HBAO + on the PC gives much softer shadows and overall picture quality. The console versions use SSAO compared to HBAO + found on the PC version. Physical simulation, water effects and texture quality are all similar in both versions.

This improves the cost of performance to around 1.4ms per frame at 1080p resolution on PS4 and Xbox One.Īs pointed out in our initial comparison, the PS4 and Xbox One versions are almost identical in terms of global effects. Essentially, this means that a single color swatch is used along with neighborhood information to reconstruct the outlines. This essentially allows the GPU to realize that multiple samples will be used to decide the final pixel color. HRAA is an anti-aliasing solution that is more geared towards multisampling than supersampling because the latter is known to sometimes cause performance problems. Console versions use the HRAA solution to maintain sharper and cleaner picture quality. Both versions run at 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second with very little drop-off during intense gaming scenarios where there’s a lot going on onscreen. Surprisingly, the performance on the PS4 and Xbox One versions is solid. Overall, the version PC is a bit of a scramble bag and nowhere is it as optimized as Far Cry 3 was.Ī selection of screenshots showing the difference between the PS4 and Xbox One versions.ĭirect video comparison between PS4 and Xbox One versions. Don’t get me wrong, Far Cry 4 looks great if you have a capable PC, but we can’t help but think that it’s more of a revamped version of Far Cry 3. This is a clear indication that this game was designed with the latest generation in mind. Although Far Cry 4 is a very graphically intense game with lush green environments, it is hard not to notice that the game uses similar assets, fire effects, water simulation and physics from Far Cry 3. However, reducing anti-aliasing to SMAA gave us almost constant 60 frames per second. Our second test was done on a GTX 680 and an Intel I7 4930K and surprisingly we still couldn’t get to 60 fps with each setting at maximum. Reducing anti-aliasing to SMAA and shadow quality gave us much more consistent performance at around 40-50 fps. This has led to several stuttering issues. We’ve seen drops as low as 25 and as high as 70. We were able to push for 1080p resolution with all settings pushed to the max, but the frame rate was variable. Unlike Ubisoft’s other AAA game this year, Far Cry 4’s performance on AMD cards is kind of a mix. As usual, the first test was run on R9 290 and AMD FX-8350 8-Core 4.0 Ghz with 16 GB of memory.

The PS4 screenshots above clearly show that Tesselation is absent in the console versions.įor this, we tested the game on two different configurations of the PC version of Far Cry 4.

But the question is, does this fit well with AMD and Nvidia setups? In Far Cry 4, Ubisoft provided tons of settings including Post FX, Shadow Quality, Water, Terrain, and Ambient Occlusion.

Far Cry 3 from 2012 adapted extremely well to a multitude of different setups and was essentially free from any performance issues. But does Far Cry 4 suffer from the same faith as Assassin’s Creed Unity? As usual we will start this analysis with the PC version. Ubisoft Montreal has always been at the forefront of pushing gaming technology to its absolute limits and has been quite lackluster at times when it comes to optimizing some of its games.

AAA publishers like Electronic Arts and Ubisoft persist in the development of intergenerational games and although people who make games face challenges from hour to hour, there is no doubt that they have been able to deepen their knowledge in pushing ten-year-old hardware to their absolute limits while optimizing functionality for the current generation.įar Cry 4 is one example. Unlike the last generations of consoles, some game developers do not create games for a specific console. TIt’s an interesting time to be a game developer.
